As winter sets in it’s time to up the ante on your beauty regime – but with so many products to choose from, it’s hard to know what really, truly works. We asked five industry gurus to share their must-have beauty buys for keeping skin radiant and hair glossy, no matter what the weather throws your way. Our experts have even supplied some top tips on how to get the best from each product.

Payot Paris

Pâte Grise Overnight Spot Treatment, £15.50

Everyone hates having spots, me included – I was a very spotty teenager. Sometimes we rush to use the strongest, newest potion, and though you might get a quick fix, these may dry or irritate the skin too much. The French know a lot about skincare, and this product has been in the Payot Paris range for three generations. It is best used overnight, to heal, calm and soothe minor blemishes.
Expert tip Be efficient and regular with blemish control: it is vital to have a good cleansing routine.

Egyptian Magic

All Purpose Skin Cream, £25.50

This is my one of my desert island products, something I discovered about 15 years ago in LA. I love that, as an all-natural balm, it can be used for so many things: healing and moisturising lips, elbows, heels, nose (especially after a cold)… I have even used it as a cleanser. An all-round emergency friend.
Expert tip Decant some into a small pot to slip into your handbag or wash bag so it is always at hand.

Dr Hauschka

Rose Day Cream, £23.95

I discovered this cream on a shoot for German Vogue. The model had beautiful skin, even though it was the midst of winter. I asked her what skincare she used, and she introduced me to Dr Hauschka. We went straight to the pharmacy, and I’ve been hooked ever since. The Rose Cream for me always comes out in winter, when everyone suffers from the effects of cold, central heating and, for models, endless plane journeys.
Expert tip Last thing at night, massage it onto thoroughly cleansed skin, starting from your neck and working upwards in small circular movements. The beautiful rose smell is very relaxing, and night will give it time to do its best work. (I wouldn’t recommend this for oily skin types.)

Jouer Cosmetics

Essential Matte Touch, £20

This is a perfect handbag companion, as it won’t fall open no matter how much you bang it about. It takes down excess sheen, while still allowing you to create a youthful dewy complexion, which is rare in a mattifying product. Apply it before, during or after make-up.
Expert tip Target shiny areas only such as the T-zone. Apply with a brush, sponge or your finger where needed.

DuWop

Reverse Lipliner, £15

If you like wearing lipstick or gloss, especially the super-pigmented formulas around now, this product is a saviour, a great pro trick to stop feathering and bleeding outside the lip line. It’s moisturising, anti-ageing and fills in the vertical wrinklettes one gets around the mouth, keeping your lipstick picture-perfect at all times.
Expert tip This product works on all skin tones and ages.

Beautyblender

Beautyblender, £16

This is a really good way to apply make-up. The ergonomic shape makes it great to evenly cover the nooks and crannies of your face, from around your eye socket to the tide line along the jaw and neck. It can be used for tinted moisturisers, concealers and foundations, allowing you to completely control the amount of coverage on the skin
Expert tip Always dampen the sponge before use.

Philip B

Oud Royal Forever Shine Conditioner, £20 and Oud Royal Forever Shine Shampoo, £15

Unlike many hair products, Philip B’s Oud really does what it says on the bottle. Not only brilliant at retaining moisture in the hair shaft, this is also good for your scalp with its non-irritating, SLS-free formula. These products are like hair CPR, and make your locks smell divinely luxe.
Expert tip I always recommend these to my colour clients because, although the shampoo cleanses well, it doesn’t strip the colour, and the conditioner is high in amino acids, so it tames and conditions without any leftover weight to stop bounce.

Rahua

Finishing Treatment, £38

I love everything from this range: it’s 100 per cent natural, and the people who make it care about the sourcing because the founder is Amazonian (from Ecuador). This rich, cream can be used as a rinse-out or leave-in conditioner, or as a styling product to smooth and prevent frizz.
Expert tip As it holds moisture so well, this is a dream for curly, coarse or frizzy hair.

Acca Kappa

Kotibe boar-bristle hairbrush, £25

These brushes are impeccably made in Italy, so they stand even the trials of salon use. They’re brilliant for stimulating circulation in the scalp, and blood-flow to the roots of your hair for strong, healthy growth. The boar bristles spread natural oils down the shaft to help moisturise the longer parts of your hair.
Expert tip Use on curly hair before you wash it – people tend not to brush curly hair for fear of frizz, and this affects its health and shine.

Collin

Regenerating Collagen Gel, £47.24

I love this gel because it invisibly hydrates skin without leaving a greasy film that might disturb make-up. It’s also a great anti-ageing moisturiser for men or women with oily skin.
Expert tip For seriously dehydrated skin I apply the gel thickly as a mask, leave for 15 minutes, then wipe off any excess (there rarely is any, as this sinks in so well).

Anastasia Beverly Hills

Brow Wiz, £15.50

I generally prefer a matte shadow to fill in brows, as pencils often appear waxy or shiny on gaps, but this pencil is demi-matte, which makes brows appear naturally groomed and well-defined.
Expert tip Use the fine pencil tip to create natural-looking, feathery strokes, or a nice sharp point as you taper the brow to a fine end.

The Pro Make-up Shop

Hygiene Collection Makeup Brush Cleanser, £9

This is amazing! It removes even the reddest lipstick from lip brushes, which is generally impossible to do.
Expert tip Spritz a little onto a tissue and wipe across your make-up brushes and sponges to keep them hygienically clean and looking brand new.

Escentric Molecules

Molecule 01, £64

Molecule 01 is one of my favourite fragrances. I am always asked which scent I am wearing, and people always comment on how gorgeous is it. It’s addictive, long-lasting and seductive.
Expert tip It makes a great gift, since it is both completely unique and smells different on everyone.

We love the graceful proportions of its Georgian townhouse premises, the cool colours and minimal leanings of the decor, the little gourmet shop, the weekend brunch, and all of Anna Hansen’s globally inspired food, a bold step away from the prevailing English tendency when she opened in 2008, and ever-thrilling for her regular clientele.

Anna’s menus feature exciting ingredients and kickass herbs and spices, things like cassava, samphire, smoked chilli, Thai basil cress, green tea, sea beets and Lucques olives. Nothing’s that hard to find for Londoners, and the recipes in the handsome The Modern Pantry cookbook are made even more accessible with suggestions of substitutions, side dishes and short cuts.

This Mexican-inspired dish is great for winter, with its rich, intense sauce, and natural affinity with game. Anna prepared it for us with guinea fowl, but it goes just as well with chicken, rabbit, pork, even monkfish. The chocolate in the sauce is a Mexican thing: it is often used to bring depth to a savoury sauce. There are a lot of ingredients, and the method sounds convoluted, but it’s quite straightforward. Serve with tomatillo salsa, the recipe for which also appears in The Modern Pantry book, fried plantain and mustard greens or cavolo nero, or plain brown rice.

Anna’s mole tips

You can get tomatillos from specialist markets, supermarkets and food halls such as Selfridges. Tinned ones are fine as an alternative, they just won’t caramelise as quickly when you grill them.

The aromatic powder mixture that you make with the nuts, seeds, herbs, spices and breadcrumbs is wonderful sprinkled onto salads, steamed vegetables, and so on. Make an extra batch!

If you can’t find Urfa chilli, any mild chilli flakes will do.

If you do this with monkfish, do use fish stock instead of chicken stock.

Depending on how thick you like it, loosen the mole with water during the cooking stage if need be. You don’t actually have to cook the meat in the sauce – you can grill or barbecue it and serve the mole on the sauce on the side.

Looking good in a suit isn’t as easy as all that. Too tweedy and you look a geography teacher. Too flash = car salesman. Get the fit wrong, and you’ve all the savoir-faire of a 14-year-old in his granddad’s get-up. Fortunately, for Editer readers, help is at hand in the form of Savile Row’s savviest, Patrick Grant, the man behind Norton & Sons (bespoke brilliance) and the super-cool ready-to-wear label E Tautz. This month, as part of the menswear London Collections, he sent oversized overcoats and crisp check suits down the BFC catwalk. Here, he offers guidance on everything from cut to colour.

Two-button or three?

Neither is smarter nor more formal. Buttons are a matter of personal preference, as the silhouette is essentially the same. What you want is to make sure that the key button position is on the waist, (top in a two-button, middle in a three; you never do up the bottom button on a suit, unless you’re wearing white tie), as it’s the focal point for the eye. It creates the classical masculine proportion. A two-button does reveal more shirt and tie, and possibly creates an illusion of length, which might work for shorter guys. (Vertical stripes are good for this, too.)

What about body shape?

People worry too much about body shape. And some make the mistake of thinking that short jackets make your legs look longer. I think its completely the opposite – a nice long skirt on the coat disguises the crotch and bottom. The trick is to make sure that key button sits on the natural waist.

What about material and colour?

Navy worsted flannel is an elegant cloth. It’s matt and very forgiving, which makes it versatile; you could wear the jacket with other trousers as a blazer. You can wear it in the evening or in the day. It’s a good place to start if you’re buying a suit. Charcoal grey flannel is very good, too. It’s the suit that I wear the most, and it’s nice and English-feeling. Grey and navy are best as they work with everything, and allow you to have fun with your shirt or tie if you want a bit of colour.

How about double-breasted?

It’s a very smart-looking suit. It has a sense of authority to it, without really changing the silhouette. It conceals things nicely, and is really just very smart.

What if I want to go bolder?

Something like this hand-woven tweed, with its orange threads, is very lively and interesting – but it’s tough to wear, you’ve got to be careful. With more interesting colours or patterns you must be aware of what you’re going to wear it with.

With pinstripes, say, you should never have two patterns of the same scale – if you’re going mix to stripes and checks, make sure they are different breadths in order for it to look harmonious. It’s advanced suit-wearing.

A native of Lisbon, Nuno Mendes lived and worked all over the world before hanging his hat in East London, where he has dwelt for the past seven years, close to Broadway Market. When he isn’t hard at work in the kitchen of his restaurant, Viajante, up the road in Bethnal Green, he can often be seen queuing for a Yum Bun or stopping for a coffee with friends.

Yum Buns gets an honourable mention here: they were taking a break when we did this shoot, but they were the traders Nuno wanted to big up the most: ‘I’ve known them since they first set up here,’ he says. ‘The product is amazing, and they are super nice. Louisa’s buns even rival David Chang’s at Momofuku in NYC!’ You’ll find them on Saturdays, from February, in the schoolyard part of the market.

‘I love what Ule does,’ says Nuno. ‘His smoked salmon, prepared in a smokehouse in Stoke Newington, is incredible, my favourite, for sure. It’s a destination product. I love that you can come here and buy it direct from him, so near to where it is smoked. Look out for the little crostinis with crème fraîche.’ The stall is on the main drag of the market, usually near the Dove pub.

‘I come here three days a week, if not more, for a flat white or a latte. Climpson’s is still one of the best coffee roasters in London. They came to Broadway Market about the same time I did. For filter coffee, I frequent a gentleman who drip brews coffee at his stall in the centre of the market on Saturdays, using single origin beans ground to order.’

Go-to designer for Mark Hix and Jamie Oliver, Martin Brudnizki gives serious thought to making the most of urban interiors

The post Deep space appeared first on Editer.

Martin Brudnizki is the interior designer behind the look and feel of many of London’s handsomest clubs, houses and restaurants, from Annabel’s and the Club at the Ivy to Hix and Dean Street Townhouse. He talks to Editer about functionality, lighting, colour, and how you can maximise small spaces – as he has in his elegant West London home.

“My mother was my first great influence. She is the most elegant woman I know, and her eye for design is faultless. I grew up in Sweden, and was interested in the craft and detail of Scandinavian design from a young age. I never really warmed to the Swedish aesthetic, but I came to appreciate the way different cultures approach technique, aesthetic and function. I moved to London to study in 1990, then set up my own studio in 2000 to work on a mixture of commercial and residential projects.

My philosophy is my process – not a look or a trend. The first thing I do is look at the building. There are always stories in the architecture, the street and the city. Then I think about how the space needs to function and how to make it comfortable. I believe that the old and the new should feel as though they know one another.

Don’t be afraid to develop an eclectic interior just because it’s a small space. The things in your home aren’t supposed to match; an apartment should show your journey through life. And with colours, the size of the room shouldn’t dictate which ones you use, though neutral colours tend to work well, used alongside bright accents in rugs, cushions or artworks. Strong colour in a small space can be overwhelming.

Place lighting according to task: a lamp over the desk, wall lights over the bed. This means you can easily change the way the space functions and feels. Try to avoid using recessed downlights to provide general lighting and, instead, opt for a more flexible ‘layering’ of fitted lights and lamps.

With small spaces, I start with the interior architecture, and make structural changes to optimise the efficiency of the space. Partition walls that dissect spaces without splitting off rooms are very effective. Here, I built a wall to create a hallway; the wall also doubles as a floor to ceiling cupboard space.

All the furniture in a small space should have a precise function. Bespoke pieces designed to fit the space are worth investing in. This bed has been built to fit the recess and has storage underneath.

Do remember that you can do without separate spaces. An intelligently set up room can function in different capacities at different times, from dining room to bedroom. I also don’t think you need a microwave. Home-cooked food is much better. And eating out is better still…”

These days, the provenance of your coffee beans is as important as the label on your wine. But once you’ve invested in your ingredients, how do you make sure you achieve the best brew possible? We asked Tim Williams, coffee guru at Workshop Coffee Co., to share his top tips.

“It seems obvious, but without good coffee as a starting point, there’s very little even the best barista can do to produce a great cup,” says Tim. Be sure to buy from a coffee-roasting company or specialist coffee retailer if you can. Check for a ‘roasted on’ date and at least some information about the farm or region the coffee is from. A country of origin is not enough. “Likewise, grinding your coffee fresh, just before you brew with it, will make a staggering difference to the quality in the cup. You’ll regret not having done it before.” Finally, “invest in an AeroPress, ” says Tim.

I try to feed my family as much home-made bread as possible. Sometimes, during the week, I run out. I developed this recipe for those moments when I want fresh bread but don’t have the time for a lengthy baking session. I always have the ingredients in my store cupboard, and you can pick up thick yoghurt from a Turkish shop. Rye is a typical Nordic ingredient, and wholemeal, so it’s healthy enough to eat every day. You could use olive oil instead of rapeseed oil, but it wouldn’t be very Nordic.

There’s no kneading, resting or proving, so you can make these flatbreads from scratch when you get home from work, or while you’re preparing lunch. It couldn’t be easier: just mix your ingredients and bake. I’ve based my dough on a Finnish recipe: traditional variations would use barley, potato or parsnip. They aren’t dense, and not sweet, in spite of the syrup. They taste natural and clean, and keep well until the next day.

Warming exotic spice and a dash of Oscars glamour ought to get the week off to a good start. The Little Mary is an interpretation of a 1920s classic by Claridge’s bartender Dennis Broci: an Asian-inspired adaptation of the Mary Pickford cocktail, which was invented in Cuba when ‘America’s sweetheart’ was there filming with Charlie Chaplin and her husband Douglas Fairbanks. The original is made with light rum, pineapple, maraschino and grenadine. Denis has infused maraschino liqueur with whole star anise and added crushed rose pepper to spice it up.

Denis’ top tips

Use six whole star anise to infuse the maraschino liqueur for at least 24 hours. Leaving the bottle in a warm place will help.

If you can’t get hold of rose pepper, use cracked black pepper and add a touch (up to 3ml) more grenadine.

Shaking this cocktail dry (ie: without ice) first will create more froth, so you get a wonderful foam on top of the drink.

If rum isn’t your thing, try this with an aromatic gin such as Plymouth.

If you have spare time, bake pineapple chunks with caster sugar and cracked rose pepper for an extra-delicious garnish.

Like Sandy trying to be down with the Pink Ladies, Stoke Newington Church Street has, for many years, searched for a cool that stayed tantalisingly beyond it. There was always something a little wholesome about it, a little mumsy. There were bars, for sure, but they never quite made up for all those sugar-free quinoa cakes and organic baby grows.

Recently, things have started to change. It’s not quite that Church Street has slipped into black leather and started smoking, and it hasn’t gone out to court the youth, but it’s been recalibrated by a glut of interesting new places. If not exactly hip, it is certainly charming now, and becoming more so all the time. Borough Wines’ resident bottle buff, Maddie Bryett told us where to buy Church Street’s best flat white (go to the Parlour at number 167), and gave us the lowdown on Stokey’s new hot spots.

In small hits or saturated blocks, strong colours energise a space. And subtle, grown-up shades create an atmosphere of comfort and style. Bringing a bit of colour into your bedroom is fun, stylish and easy to do – when you know how.

We headed to the Zetter Townhouse for inspiration, where the 13 sumptuous bedrooms, done out by sought-after interior designer Russell Sage, look cool yet comfortable, deploying a kaleidoscope of colours and skilfully selected objects and artworks.

So, where to start? Bold shades in heritage colours are the building blocks of this look. Paint walls in a single vibrant shade, and choose one or two clashing yet complementary colours as accents. Peacock blues with rich shades of fuchsia and red look striking and full-on. If you’re just tentatively stepping away from off-whites, try mushroom hues matched with autumnal tones.

Add texture with quintessentially English textiles. The Zetter Townhouse uses Gainsborough fabrics reworked in contemporary shades. Don’t be scared of clashing fabrics and vivid prints, grounded with crisp white bedlinen for a modern take.

Finally, add humour and personality with a smattering of antique finds and quirky artefacts. Grannie-style lampshade, old-school clothes hooks and reframed charity shop prints – whatever makes you smile.

All done. As the winter nights draw in, snuggle up with your vintage throw, Kindle and steaming mug of hot chocolate. Much cosier than a white cube, isn’t it?
