The original designs and beautiful construction of Penelope Chilvers’ boots, shoes and slippers make her one of contemporary London’s true style artisans; she has won a loyal following for her Dandy slippers, and her chic, practical boots. Much influenced by time spent in Spain, Penelope has also lived and worked around Portobello and Notting Hill on and off since she was 21. ‘I love this part of the city because of its incredible diversity, and because Portobello Market never fails to capture my imagination, often lending inspiring new ideas.’ Here, Penelope shares her favourite Portobello pitstops.

Fez is an Aladdin’s cave of genuine Moroccan artifacts and treasures, including beautiful mint tea teapots and glasses that make great presents and are relatively inexpensive. Spending time in here really makes you feel as though you’re in the souk in Marrakech.

This is like being in a sweet shop for me! They have crisp Swedish linen by the metre in every colour imaginable, as well as beautiful antique Welsh blankets, cashmere and wool blankets from Scotland, and Indian silk shawls. It’s a textile lovers dream.
Garcia & Sons

Garcia is a little piece of Spain right here in London, established in 1957. I buy Spanish groceries from them – I particularly love their traditional olive oil biscuits, aka tortas de aciete, which have wonderful authentic packaging design.

Stevie Parle’s restaurant is housed in a converted Victorian wharf building on the canal at Portobello Dock. The food is seasonal and experimental and always delicious; I always leave the restaurant content and satisfied, but never uncomfortably full.

The Lisboa Café is a little Portugal. I stop off here to warm up with a hot chocolate and a pastel de nata or custard tart when I’m wandering around the Golborne Road market on a Friday morning.
Fresh Juice Bar

I like to visit the Fresh Juice Bar near the covered market for a healthy and colourful experience. It’s an independent stall and does a great fresh smoothie made with tropical fruits that gives an instant vitamin boost.
